THE CENTRAL ISSUE

2011 fares cannot sustain a 2026 service.

The core distance rate has effectively remained unchanged for 15 years. The small 2022 flagfall adjustment did not increase the rate earned per kilometre and was never accepted by the industry as a meaningful fare review.

When revenue stays fixed but fuel, tyres, parts, repairs, insurance and vehicle costs increase, operators retain less. Inflation then reduces the purchasing power of what remains.

THE FAIR-FARE PLAN

A transparent, practical and permanent outcome.

Set a permanent distance rate of FJD $1.50 per kilometre.
Maintain the current FJD $1.40 per kilometre rate until a permanent decision is made.
Use real financial evidence covering the full cost of operating a taxi.
Recognise waiting time, empty return journeys and vehicle replacement needs.
Avoid repeated short-term changes that force operators to pay for meter reconfiguration.
Create a stable and transparent review mechanism for the future.
WHY THIS MATTERS

Sustainable fares support the whole service.

Viable small businesses

Most operators carry the costs and risks of a one-vehicle business, including finance, maintenance, insurance and replacement.

Reliable passenger service

Sustainable income helps operators maintain roadworthy vehicles, complete repairs and keep services available.

A fair process

A transparent cost review is better for operators and passengers than short-term adjustments and repeated meter costs.
